Zero-Click Search

Searches resolved entirely within an AI answer without any website visits — the phenomenon driving the shift from rank-and-click to citation-first optimization.

Plain Language Definition

A zero-click search is a search where the user gets their answer immediately from the AI block or featured snippet and leaves without clicking through to any website. AI Overviews have dramatically increased zero-click rates on informational queries. This means traditional organic traffic for many queries is declining even when rankings hold — making AI citation (and the brand visibility it creates) more valuable than ever.

Technical Definition

Search transaction resolved entirely within the platform presentation layer with zero external click-through events — measured as sessions where the SERP satisfied the user intent without requiring offsite navigation, increasingly triggered by AI generative answer components.

Why This Matters for AI Search Visibility

Zero-click searches mean traditional organic traffic can decline even when you maintain good rankings, because AI answers intercept the user’s information need before they click. Being cited in the AI answer that creates the zero-click — rather than being the unclicked organic result below it — is now the primary objective for informational query visibility.
