Search Generative Experience (SGE)

Google’s experimental precursor to AI Overviews, which established the citation and layout patterns used today.

Plain Language Definition

SGE was Google’s early experimental trial of an AI-generated search system, which evolved into today’s AI Overviews. It was tested in Google Search Labs and gave SEOs and marketers their first look at how generative answers would change search page layouts, citation patterns, and click behavior. Understanding SGE’s evolution helps explain why AI Overviews work the way they do.

Technical Definition

Google’s beta development platform for real-time generative summary refinement, schema extraction pattern testing, and conversational follow-up layout experiments — the direct precursor to production AI Overviews.

Why This Matters for AI Search Visibility

The patterns established during SGE testing — which content got cited, which schema signals were weighted, how citation carousels were populated — directly shaped how AI Overviews work today. SGE history is the best early evidence base for AI Overview optimization.
